German fashion e-tailer Zalando is adding cosmetics for men to its selection.

The online retailer has been selling make-up, creams and perfume for women for over six months. The assortment for men will be considerably smaller, with 1,500 articles, compared to the 7,000 cosmetic products for women. Brands that the retailer will put on offer include House 99 by David Beckham, L'Oreal's Clarisonic, and Baxters of California, amongst others.

Claudia Reth, category vice president, said: “We are happy with the launch of Beauty for women in Germany... We see that 70% of our customers also buy fashion products when shopping Beauty, which confirms our cross-selling strategy by initial data points. This is why it’s the right time to add Beauty for men.”

Zalando also announced that it is rolling out its beauty section to Austria and Poland with a full assortment to come before Christmas.

Since 2008, Zalando has grown to become the largest online retailer in Europe, although business has seen a recent slowdown: in mid-September, the company lowered its forecast. Factoring into the slump, customers ordered more often in the second quarter, but with lower total purchase amounts on average than in the same period one year ago.
