Mountain Equipment owner sees improving results

The owner of the Mountain Equipment retail brand — Outdoor & Sports Company — has filed its accounts for 2021 and reported turnover up to £51 million from the £37.7 million it saw in 2020.

That’s breaks down into a 34% increase for the UK and a 37.5% rise in exports.

The British company was founded in 1961 and sells a wide range of outdoor clothing and accessories, including pieces for hiking, rock climbing, skiing, mountaineering and expeditions.

It has benefited from rising interest in outdoor pursuits among the general public and the adoption of activewear as everyday-wear, something that continued during the pandemic but accelerated as life returned to normal.

It all meant it made operating profits of £6.42 million last year, up from £3.19 million in 2020. The gross margin rose from 27.1% to 29.1%.

In its accounts, the company said “sales to export markets and a focus on continuous product development are seen as the drivers for long-term growth of the business”.

And it said it’s working to increase margins through higher prices, “getting support from suppliers”, and reviewing spending.
