Moda announces shortlist for History In the Making footwear competition

Published
Feb 18, 2020

The work of eight BA footwear design students will be on display at Moda in Birmingham this month as part of the History In the Making student competition with De Montfort University.

Instead of choosing six shortlisted entries, competition judges including Lisa Govier, director of Moda Footwear and Sam Hunt, director of Hunted Brands, selected eight finalists, citing 'the quality of submissions'.

The designs will be showcased in the Footwear Hall at the fashion trade show, which is taking place on 23-25 February at the NEC Birmingham.

De Montfort students were asked to explore global culture to develop a range of footwear that interprets the broad spectrum of 'heritage' incorporating fashion influences, materials and colour trends for the Autumn/Winter 2020/21 season.

Lisa Govier, director of Footwear at Moda says: “The standards were very high this year, so we decided to go with eight instead of our usual six shortlist of students. I can’t wait to see their work on display at Moda and give these incredibly talented designers the opportunity to showcase their work to a global and local audience.”

The eight shortlisted designers are Finn Taberer, James Han Park, Heemin Choi, Ellie Gray, Brandon Haley, Hyunjee Park, Swan Hlaing and Sesong Ju.

Displaying a wealth of creative talent, students explored a host of cultural influences, from the evolution of rock-climbing to the cuts and folds of the Japanese kimono.

The winner will be announced on Sunday, February 23 at 17:30pm on the Main Stage.
