H&M unveils collaboration with South African brand Mantsho

After announcing its plan to collaborate with designer Palesa Mokubung in April, the Swedish brand H&M has finally released images of the collaborative collection. Made up of 15 pieces, the collection features an array of lush patterns and wax-printed designs set against a vibrant colour palette.

The collection will be available from August 15 in select H&M stores and online - H&M

Designer Palesa Mokubung  is based in Johannesburg and launched her brand Mantsho in 2004. Mantsho means “black is beautiful” in the Sesotho language and H&M chose to work with the designer because of her contemporary clothing line.

“We particularly liked her modern and pointed vision and her work with colours, prints, and cuts which highlight the female silhouette in a flattering and original way,” said Pernilla Wohlfahrt, director of design at H&M.

The collection features a detachable ruffled collar that can also be worn as a belt to enhance the silhouette, an asymmetrical panelled dress, and a tunic dress with a bow-sash at the collar. The collection is made from cotton, linen, viscose, and polyester and prices range from €9.99 ($11.12) for a bag to €99.99 for a linen dress.

With this collection, H&M has started to geographically diversify its collaborations, after having mostly formed partnerships with Western brands in the past. For the upcoming autumn season, H&M teamed up on capsule collections with the Italian designer Giambattista Valli and has also joined forces with the Chinese designer Angel Chen.
