Hēdoïne launches biodegradable tights

Published
Sep 6, 2021

Eco-friendly tights are about to make their debut. UK-based hosiery brand Hēdoïne is launching biodegradable tights on 7 September and via a Selfridges pop-up on 20 September.

After launching seamless and ladder-resistant tights in 2019, now Hēdoïne has produced a “unique” pair of ladder-resistant, biodegradable tights in time for the autumn/winter season. The 30 denier sheer tights will be part of a biodegradable collection.

The Italian-made tights use certified biodegradable yarn and ladder-resistant technology. Then, at the end of the tights life, they can be disposed of via general waste and composted via an anaerobic waste management facility, Hēdoïne claims.

The biodegradation process begins, and continues to develop within 3-5 years under these anaerobic conditions. Bacteria breaks down the nylon into organic matter, biomass and biogas - both of which can be exploited as new environmental resources and be used to generate electricity.

Currently, all available biodegradable nylon requires a waste management treatment under anaerobic conditions. Unique to Hēdoïne, the company has set up a commercial agreement with a waste management facility to ensure individuals who live in countries or regions that do not facilitate anaerobic conditions can still access a right end-of-life treatment for their tights by sending them back to Hēdoïne for processing.

Founders, Anna Rauch and Alexandra Tymann "plan to continue embracing slow fashion innovation to counter fast fashion, with circularity at the core of their sustainability agenda”, they said.
