El Corte Ingles and Alibaba have signed an agreement to explore business opportunities in the areas of commerce, retail, cloud computing services, digital innovation and mobile payments, announced the Spanish department store chain in a statement.

El Corte Inglés

The companies decided to team up with the goal of taking advantage of their respective strengths and that of their business units, including Tmall, Alibaba Cloud, Alipay and AliExpress, which will collaborate on a number of relevant initiatives.

As part of the global agreement and driven by a digital transformation, El Corte Ingles and Alibaba will explore a series of business opportunities and collaborations to progress their omnichannel plans and better integrate the online and offline experience.

One of the main projects being developed under the partnership will see El Corte Ingles use Alibaba’s B2C platforms including Tmall and AliExpress to offer its brands and products to customers in China and the rest of the world.

The ultimate goals is to give Alibaba’s users greater access to El Corte Ingles' vast selection of Spanish and international brands, including a number of Made in Spain products.

ALIEXPRESS TO OPEN CONCESSIONS IN EL CORTE INGLES

Meanwhile, AliExpress will consider establishing concession stores and other physical spaces in El Corte Ingles shopping centres, to provide a new shopping experience whilst introducing some of its latest products to Spanish consumers.

The companies will also explore collaborating “closely” on delivery and supply infrastructure and channels. Here, Alibaba can benefit from the experience and logistics capabilities of the Spanish chain, and use its physical centres as click-and-collect points for AliExpress.

Additionally, El Corte Ingles will have the opportunity to access a comprehensive set of tech solutions provided by Alibaba Cloud, Alibaba Group’s cloud computing business which includes big data analytics for real-time decision making and artificial intelligence capabilities offering customer personalisation for improved customer services.

The Spanish company signed an agreement with Alipay, the mobile and lifestyle platform operated by Ant Financial, a related company of Alibaba Group, in March to make purchases “easier and safer” for Chinese tourists visiting Spain. As part of the new agreement, new initiatives will developed to create further shopping experiences for Chinese visitors.

A PROPOSAL OF UNBEATABLE VALUE

El Corte Ingles managing director Victor del Pozo said the agreement will allow the company to combine “both the physical and online worlds, in order to offer the best shopping experience to our customers. Together, we are writing the future and placing ourselves at the forefront of trade and technology,” he emphasised.

“El Corte Inglés owns department stores in the best locations of the main cities of Spain and Portugal, and is granted with the confidence and trust of national and international customers. All of this, joined to Alibaba’s technology, will allow us to offer a proposal of unbeatable value,” del Pozo continued.

Rodrigo Cipriani Foresio, managing director for Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece at Alibaba Group, said: “We are delighted to have signed this comprehensive letter of intent with a leading international retailer such as El Corte Inglés, involving four of our business units.

“We are looking forward to joining forces with them to provide consumers in China and worldwide with the greatest products and experience. As a global technology company, digital transformation and innovation in all fields are fundamental drivers of Alibaba's mission of making it easy to do business anywhere, with the ultimate goal of better serving our consumers and stakeholders worldwide, today and tomorrow. Hence, we are confident that the expertise and skills brought by both companies will generate incredible value and opportunities as the cooperation takes shape.”
