Busy Primark adds more self-checkouts to UK stores

Published

In a clear sign business and footfall remain strong, value fashion/lifestyle retailer Primark is introducing self-checkout services to selected stores in order to reduce exit queuing times.

Having initially trialled the self-service checkouts in its Sheffield and Northampton stores earlier this year, now West Bromwich, Kingston and Coventry stores will come on line in the coming weeks to extend the service yet further.

A Primark spokesperson told Retail Gazette that “the response so far has been really positive, especially from customers who are short on time or making smaller purchases.”

The system involves shoppers having to scan the barcode on their chosen purchas by the exit, at which point the security doors will open to let them out.

Primark has been trialling other new in-store tech in recent times as an added level of attraction and ease of shopping.

In June, the pure physical store retailer announced a trial click & collect service in 25 North of England stores featuring more than 2,000 producrts in its children’s line-up.

The launch of the trial follows the unveiling of an upgraded and enhanced non-commerce UK website in the spring that the company said has been able to drive sales due to its ability to tell consumers whether certain items are in stock in its locations.

Traffic to the website has risen 60% since April and around 15% of consumers who click on it are checking in-store availability, it noted.

More recently, Primark became the latest fashion brand to enter the vintage clothing arena, opening its first concession within its flagship Birmingham and Manchester stores in partnership with the Vintage Wholesale Company. It has also launched apparel and intimates that specifically address the menopause and, in August, following the success of debut Greggs x Primark fashion collection, it added  21 new pieces to the collection.
