Brief return: Debenhams stores to reopen… for closing-down sale

Published
Apr 9, 2021

Debenhams, the failed UK department store group, hasn’t disappeared from the high streets quite yet. Many of the almost-100 stores still in existence in England and Wales will reopen for up to 33 days from 12 April, offering deep discounts to clear remaining stock. They will then close permanently on May 15 .

However, the London flagship store on Oxford Street store and all 15 locations in Scotland will not be among those reopening. Some of the store locations in England have already closed and are earmarked for non-retail usage.

Customers will be offered up to 70% off fashion and homewares, with prices for beauty and fragrances reduced by up to half.

The sale forms part of the department store's final stock liquidation after collapsing last year.

Some 89 stores across England and eight stores in Wales will begin to close from May 2, with the process being completed 13 days later.

“This is the last chance for customers in England and Wales to visit their local Debenhams before sadly our stores close for good,” a spokesman said.

He added: “Stocks are limited and expected to sell out quickly so customers should visit their nearest store quickly to avoid disappointment. We are very grateful for the efforts of our staff who have worked so hard throughout the most difficult of circumstances to keep the business trading”.

Online fast-fashion retailer Boohoo bought the Debenhams brand for £55m in January after it entered administration last year for the second time in 12 months. The brand will continue to operate online.
