SEOUL, April 20, 2009 (AFP) - South Korea's SK Telecom said Monday 20 April it has opened an online shopping mall in China in hopes of becoming one of the country's leading Internet retail outlets within five years.

The company, Korea's leading mobile carrier, said qianxun.com mainly targets richer consumers in their 20s and 30s and offers apparel and fashion items from Korea, the United States and Europe.

In a statement it said it plans to expand the range of offerings to include cosmetics, travel products and cultural items.

SK Telecom last December acquired PRMAX, the Chinese subsidiary of Korea Center, which supports, sets up and operates online shopping malls. It reorganised PRMAX's online shopping website to launch qianxun.com

The company said China's e-commerce market is growing at an average annual rate of 75 percent, with total online sales of fashion products amounting to over five trillion won (3.75 billion dollars) in 2008.
