The 2018 Fashion Makes Sense Award winners are Paolo Carzana from England, who won the €2,500 jury prize; Sandermann, from Denmark, winner of the €500 public prize; and US-based designer Gal Yakobovitch, who received a special mention by the jury. The winners were chosen from 10 finalists.

With the award, Fashionclash aims to motivate designers who “create with a passion for humanity and the environment.”

The jury consisted of the following fashion professionals: Iris Ruisch, managing director at M-ode.net; Milou van Rossum, fashion editor at NRC; Borre Akkersdijk, founder at Byborre; and Olgun Aydin, supply chain sustainability manager at Puma.

Fashionclash is an innovative and interdisciplinary showcase for fashion, and a worldwide network of emerging designers and artists. Since 2009 the Maastricht-based platform has organized festivals, in addition to awards, exhibitions and pop-up stores. To date, Fashionclash has showcased the work of more than 1,000 designers from 50 countries. The platform is operated by designers Nawie Kuiper, Branko Popovic and Laurens Hamacher.

The Fashion Makes Sense Awards are aimed at a young, conscious new generation of designers who share innovative ideas for sustainability. The competition was first held in 2017. Birute Mazeikaite, the fashion designer behind Berlin-based label, Mukashi Mukashi Berlin was awarded the jury prize last year.
