Chic: 57,000 professionals for the first autumn edition

Published
Oct 22, 2015

After gathering 125,000 visitors and 1,200 exhibitors for its first edition last March in Shanghai, the Chinese apparel trade show, previously held on a yearly basis, announced the attendance of 57,000 professional visitors at its first autumn edition.

Chic Shanghai - 13th-15th October 2015 - Chic

This first autumn edition which, in March, shared dates and premises with the Intertextile show, recorded a reduced presence from the outset, with only some 700 brands on show. A drop which doesn't worry the organisers, the China National Garment Association, which doesn't want to make the desire for grandeur a feature of its flagship event.

"China downgraded its growth estimates. Chic does the same," Chen Dapeng, the association's Vice-President, explained to FasionMag a few days ago. "We don't want to expand at all costs, but work on the quality of our offering. Next March's edition will be comparable to the previous one, with 1,200 exhibitors. This is a sufficient number for visitors to find what they require. And we by no means expect a higher number of visitors, it's the quality of the attendance that must come first. "

The Vice-President reminded us also that Chic's function has changed. It's moved on from a manufacturing show to a contact point between Chinese and foreign players, both brands and manufacturers, now comprising clothing and textiles through the contemporaneous presence of Intertextile. Several foreign brands confirm this: they once attended to find local suppliers, but now they participate to try to launch their own products on the Chinese market.

The expectations of Chinese professionals towards the show have changed too. Rising manufacturing costs led companies to upgrade the quality of their range, and to progressively turn towards the growing domestic demand. "China is the world's largest apparel exporter, but two thirds of clothing manufacturers are now targeting the country," Chen Dapeng also pointed out. "And this is a strong trend; despite slowing down, the growth of apparel consumption remains in fact significant. "

Chic's next edition will run from 16th to 18th March 2016. The forthcoming spring edition, Chic's main one, will occupy some 5 halls over a 125,000 m² area, always within the impressive China Exhibition and Convention Centre. Once again the show will be held in conjunction with Intertextile.

Plus, it's now practically official, the show will feature an area dedicated to footwear. A show-in-show extending over 3,000 to 4,000 m², organised with the support of the federations of Chinese provinces specialised in footwear.
