Casual menswear and beauty outperform as John Lewis clearance continues

Published
Jul 18, 2017

The John lewis clearance sale continues and it helped drive sales of all departments upwards in the seven days to July 15. The period saw total sales rising 4% to £86.4 million but, as with last week, the Fashion directory was among the weaker performers.

John Lewis's clearance is driving sales higher

It was ahead by only 1% in the week, with beauty, wellbeing and leisure sales growing the most, followed by menswear. It was casual menswear that saw the most demand due to the continuing warm weather and shoppers buying summer clothing for their holiday wardrobes.

Home directory sales edged up a little more than Fashion with a 1.9% rise that was helped by clearance lines. The company said sales of furniture and flooring were particularly strong, ending the week up 5.8%.

But it was the Electrical and Home Technology directory that proved the most popular with sales there up 9.9%, again as customers made the most of clearance offers.

Communications Technology, which includes smartphones and tablets, saw sales grow by 29%. It was the strongest week so far this financial year for sales of photography equipment, another result of customers getting ready for their summer holidays.
