Auction: world record for Guerlain perfume

Published
Jun 17, 2010

BORDEAUX, 17th June 2010 – an 1870’s engraved bottle of Guerlain perfume has been sold at 45,600 Euros at the auction near Hotel Toledano in Archachon, France, a “world record”, the collection’s global perfume expert Bernard Gangler declared at the event.

The little bottle with the engraving “rue de la paix” on, which was valued between 20,000 and 30,000 at the auction at the beginning of the month, was bought by a French collector according to Gangler.

Another world record, according to the expert, was a Depinoix and Julien Viard bottle called “perfumed fountain” and valued at 10,000 Euros. It was bought for 32,400 Euros by a Canadian collector.

Amongst the 25 glass bottles sold for between 1,200 and 5,500 Euros, there was many by Rene Lalique and even a nozzle never seen before, by Chanel’s “Ivoire”, created in 1931 by Gabrielle Chanel (Coco). “Valued at 200 Euros, it was sold for 1,300 Euros”, Gangler specified.

Over the course of this auction, “one of the greatest worldwide sales”, according to the expert, 81% of the perfumes put up for auction, were acquired; mostly by the French but also by Australians, Canadians, Indians, Chinese and Russians.
